Partner cantons
In 2023, the Federal Council granted four cantons a basic licence for the trial operation of e-voting for two years. At the end of June 2025, it extended the basic licences for the successful e-voting trial operation in the cantons of Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen, Graubünden and Thurgau for a further two years. They will apply until the vote on 6 June 2027.
It means e-voting will be possible for part of the electorate in the following cantons:
- Basel-Stadt
- St. Gallen
- Graubünden
- Thurgau
St. Gallen and Graubünden to expand trial operation
The cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden will extend Swiss Post’s e-voting system to other municipalities by the end of 2025. In the canton of Thurgau, e-voting is set to be available to Swiss resident voters in five to seven municipalities for the very first time as part of a pilot phase from the March 2026 contest onwards.
The cantons of Lucerne and Geneva also use e-voting
The cantons of Lucerne and Geneva also plan to offer e-voting trials in the foreseeable future.
It’s not just Swiss citizens living abroad who appreciate being able to cast their vote wherever and whenever it suits them – more and more voters resident in Switzerland are choosing this secure and verifiable voting method. The number of votes cast electronically continues to rise. Detailed key data on the use of electronic voting can be viewed at the Federal Chancellery under e-voting trials.

Partner cantons
With Swiss Post’s e-voting solution, the cantons remain responsible for conducting votes and elections and managing the electoral register. Swiss Post itself works only with anonymized data and does not outsource any work steps to third parties or other cantons.
