Digital Health Report 2023/24: healthcare needs a national platform

Networking stakeholders is critical to digitization in the healthcare sector. This is reiterated by the ZHAW’s Digital Health Report 2023/24. In a guest article, Swiss Post stresses the need for digital networking of the ecosystem. The Swiss healthcare platform Cuore provides the basis for this.

Digitization is more complicated in the healthcare sector than in other sectors. One problem is that administrative processes are different in every hospital and medical practice. However, a joint basis for exchanging data digitally and securely is still lacking.

One of the biggest challenges in this endeavour is networking stakeholders. This is illustrated by the Digital Health Report 2023/24. For the fourth time, the ZHAW has assessed the current risks and opportunities posed by digitization in the healthcare sector.

Networking along the entire treatment path

Swiss Post is promoting the necessary networking. In his guest article, René Leuenberger, Head of Cuore Platform, explains what’s needed for this: “All stakeholders need to have access to an interoperable, national infrastructure for seamless data exchange.”

“Cuore – the Swiss health platform” provides this infrastructure. It enables secure data exchange along the entire treatment path. This means that family doctors, specialists, hospitals, laboratories and care at home providers can work together with ease. The platform is also open to insurance, pharmatech and medtech companies.

Added value for healthcare and the public

Exchanging data via Cuore reduces administrative workload substantially. By connecting the electronic patient record (EPR) via the EPR gateway, treatment-related documents are stored in the EPR – automatically and with validation. This generates resources for better coordination and a higher quality of treatment, easing the burden on specialists and reducing healthcare costs. And the patients benefit from this, too.

Convenient digital services simplify the process of exchanging data with service providers. As such, the platform offers all the requirements to become the digital cornerstone of Swiss healthcare. René Leuenberger is convinced: “With Cuore, we are making a valuable contribution towards digitization and improving stakeholder networking.”
